I don’t know why. but this subject crossed my mind again..When I was in Beijing reading a local english language newspaper I was amazed: Everything is going perfectly well in China, the government is taking care of the underpriviledged single moms etc. I told my friend how it seems China is much better than what we are “taught” by the media to believe. She had only just one comment, hey mustikka, you are reading a CHINESE newspaper”. There seemed to be none negative piece of news on that newspaper. Then I started to wonder, that probably mostly foreigners (tourists) read the english language newspapers in China. Conclusion: knowing the image of China in western press (at least in my home country Finland, assuming it’s same in other countries), wouldn’t it be great that at least some tourists can obtain a (maybe partly biased) positive image on China…No matter if it’s not true, but…I think both the negative and positive news should be balanced..
China in Finnish media lately (remember these, not the only ones, but):
-Mattel withdraws from market dangerous toys made in China
-Pollution in Beijing (times: many!)- preparation for olympics
-political satire: human rights in China: chinese politician in optician(sight test): HUMAN RIGHTS written on the board: ” I cannot really see what’s written in there”.
Some time ago..
-Spitting..spitting..Beijing olympics 2008…
I googled “china in western media” result no 1, published 2005 (Pacific News Service by George Koo): Bush visited China, held a speech. According to the commentary of the writer the western media only mentioned that China should follow Taiwan’s example. About that time Pew Research center released a survey, which revealed, that 72% of the urban Chinese believed, that their lives are gonna improve in next five years. For USA 48% and for Russia 45% of people believed so. The author wonders, why the survey didn’t get much press coverage, wondering: “Could it be because people allegedly deprived of freedom have no right to be so optimistic?” Good question to think about.
To the article.
